Andrew M. Castille

A generalist who can go deep

Andrew came to Clear Process Engineering the way most of CPE's engineers did, by building the equipment first. He spent four years at boiler OEM FSE Energy as Lead Designer and R&D Application Designer, where he co-designed the company's first circulating and bubbling fluidized bed boilers and ran ASME code calculations for pressure parts. That blank-sheet-to-commissioning experience shapes how he approaches every project today. His path there was anything but typical. Before engineering, he spent five years in live event production, handling 3D imaging, temporary power, and structural rigging for professional sports teams and touring artists across North America. As CPE's Director of Technology, Andrew is a generalist who goes deep. He might run pipe stress in Caesar II in the morning, design structural steel for a boiler support in the afternoon, and be on a plane to a plant site the next day. He's deepest in structural steel (AISC), ASME Section I and VIII pressure parts, power piping, emissions control systems, and 3D laser-scan-to-model integration, and he's logged that work at more than 40 facilities across Panama, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ireland, Canada, Mexico, and beyond. He's often the one who gets pulled in when a project needs to go from nothing to a complete, multi-discipline design package on a tight schedule, connecting the structural, mechanical, process, and piping pieces that don't naturally line up. A career highlight was serving as Lead Designer on the boiler, structural arrangement, and fuel-handling systems for the Mayo Renewable Power plant in County Mayo, Ireland, a first-of-its-kind mono-drum biomass boiler. Based in southeast Michigan, Andrew spends his off-hours fishing the Great Lakes and the St. Clair River, working wood, welding, and slowly rebuilding a deck boat from the hull up. It's proof that the instinct to design and build something with his own hands doesn't switch off when he leaves the office.

Background

Before CPE, Andrew spent four years at FSE Energy in Covington, LA as Lead Designer, R&D Application Designer, and Project Manager. He coordinated engineering across multiple offices on simultaneous multi-million-dollar projects ($80MM–$150MM annually) and co-designed FSE Energy’s first CFB and BFB boilers.

At FSE he worked on first-of-their-kind boiler designs end-to-end — from blank sheet through fabrication and commissioning — including ASME Section I and VIII code calculations and R&D programs for new combustion technologies.

Earlier in his career, he spent five years at See-Hear Productions handling 3D imaging, temporary power, and structural integrity for large-scale live events across North America.

I take a lot of pride in being a generalist who can go deep. I can run pipe stress in Caesar II in the morning, design structural steel in the afternoon, and be on a plane to a plant site the next day. That flexibility is what CPE is built on.

Outside of Work

Fishes the Great Lakes (St. Clair River, Muskegon area) and is in the middle of restoring a deck boat — hull paint, fiberglass, outboard motor, the whole rebuild. Also enjoys construction projects, woodworking, welding, and general fabrication.
